Hereditary Disorders Of Connective Tissue

Hereditary Disorders of Connective Tissues (HDCT) are ...

Diseases that affect connective tissue.

Present in many forms.

Serially underdiagnosed.

Possibly severe.

HDCTs are irregularities in the body's natural production of structural proteins, such as collagen and elastin, leading to dysfunctional connective tissue.

They include Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder, Ehlers-Danlos syndromes, Marfan Syndrome and Loeys-Dietz Syndrome among many others. These illnesses can range from being an annoyance to becoming life-threatening.

HDCTs often present with vague symptoms like joint pain, or 'looseness', which may lead to a missed diagnosis.

HDCTs can cause severe joint pain and dislocations. Serious disorders may lead to major systemic complications like ectopia lentis and mitral valve prolapse.

In some cases, the life expectancy of a patient can be drastically reduced.
